How I'm writing on 4 social platforms at once (without spreading myself too thin)

I’m writing on 4 social platforms right now:

  1. LinkedIn
  2. Twitter
  3. Substack
  4. Threads

LinkedIn is still my number 1.

But in the background I’m warming up others.

Because you never know what can happen.

Anyone at any point can:

  • Take a dislike to a comment I make
  • Report me
  • And my account is donezo

So it’s smart to get other platforms cookin’.

The problem is spreading myself too thin.

Here’s 4 habits I’ve adapted to grow 4 social platforms at once (without spreading myself too thin):

Habit 1. Prioritize my main platform

Like I said, LinkedIn is my number 1.

I have 150k followers and established myself and get business from the platform often. I create content for LinkedIn first. Then adapt for other platforms.

For example, I’ll write longer form educational content as I know this gets the best outcome on LinkedIn possible for me.

What I post on other platforms comes after that.

Habit 2. Take consistently small steps

I grew my LinkedIn insanely quick - 0 to 100k in 19 months.

(not as quick as these crazy fools doing it in 3 months lol)

I’m never gonna grow the other three platforms that quick, unless I hired help. Which maybe one day I’ll do, but I’m good for now. I want it to be manageable and consistent.

If the time comes LinkedIn crashes, I can decide to shift my focus and go all in on one of the other three.

Simple.

Habit 3. Repurpose content

I tried posting on LinkedIn & Twitter, while writing different content for each.

I burned out on that pretty quick.

I don’t care how prolific you are a writer, that shit is gonna get you one day.

So the best way to overcome that is to simply repurpose from main platform (LinkedIn) to backup platforms (Twitter, Substack, Threads).

Nobody reads everything I post on each individual platform and tbh, I don’t care if they did. It’s my business and I need to run it best for me and my goals.

Some of my favourite Twitter accounts create 3-5 long form threads per week then just repurpose those same threads into:

  • Short posts
  • Re-cap posts
  • Videos

And it’s always helpful because I miss things.

Save yourself the time and effort and repurpose.

Habit 4. Don’t write platform specifics

If I write a piece of content that is specific to LinkedIn, guess what?

I then can’t repurpose that over to other platforms. Because it’s not relevant. So I need to write content that is specific to my niche, not the platform I’m posting on.

For example, what you’re reading right now doesn’t say “here” referring to the platform you’re reading it on.

Or mention any specific tactics that only apply to LinkedIn or Twitter etc.

And it’s pretty dumb to tie your brand to a platform that is not owned by you or in your control

TL;DR:

  1. Prioritize my main platform
  2. Take consistently small steps
  3. Repurpose content
  4. Don’t write platform specifics

I’m a one man band so I can’t spread myself too thin.

But I need contingency plans for and to be slowly growing.

Writing is my strength, it’s all distribution after that.

Yesterday I remembered how annoying it was when I'd post on social and get basically no likes or comments (from anyone, not even the right people). I'd put the effort in, but no results. Are you in the same boat right now? You are not alone. I’ve been there too.(remember everyone started zero, doesn't matter where they are now). I'd wonder why my content wasn’t landing with the audience I wanted to attract. And let's be real, it sucks. But over time, I realised it wasn’t about working harder...

Writing on social is unpredictable. Amount of times I’ve written up what I think is a freaking legendary post, then it bombs or doesn’t blow up like I thought it would? 100s of times. Easy to get disheartened. Especially when you’re just getting started and every post feels like you’re putting yourself on a billboard for everyone to see. The mistake most online writers make though? They don’t learn from “bad” posts. But after writing 10,000+ social posts, I’m numb to the feeling of “bad”...

I’ve been writing on LinkedIn since January 2022. At the point of writing this it's October 2024, so that brings my online writing journey up to 34 months. Then consider I've posted at least 7 times per week since then, and we're up to around 1,000 pieces of content JUST on LinkedIn. But sometimes, my posts don’t land the way I expect. And it’s demoralizing. When you think you’re sharing gold, but the audience doesn’t react. That feeling isn't reserved for newbies - it still hits occasionally...
